It's a kitchen degreaser. It's a window cleaner. It kills athlete's foot. Oh, and you can drink it.

Sounds like the old "Saturday Night Live" gag for Shimmer, the faux floor polish plugged by Gilda Radner. But the elixir is real. It has been approved by U.S. regulators. And it's starting to replace the toxic chemicals Americans use at home and on the job.

The stuff is a simple mixture of table salt and tap water whose ions have been scrambled with an electric current. Researchers have dubbed it electrolyzed water -- hardly as catchy as Mr. Clean. But at the Sheraton Delfina in Santa Monica, some hotel workers are calling it el liquido milagroso -- the miracle liquid.


That's as good a name as any for a substance that scientists say is powerful enough to kill anthrax spores without harming people or the environment.

Used as a sanitizer for decades in Russia and Japan, it's slowly winning acceptance in the United States. A New York poultry processor uses it to kill salmonella on chicken carcasses. Minnesota grocery clerks spray sticky conveyors in the checkout lanes. Michigan jailers mop with electrolyzed water to keep potentially lethal cleaners out of the hands of inmates.

In Santa Monica, the once-skeptical Sheraton housekeeping staff has ditched skin-chapping bleach and pungent ammonia for spray bottles filled with electrolyzed water to clean toilets and sinks.

"I didn't believe in it at first because it didn't have foam or any scent," said housekeeper Flor Corona. "But I can tell you it works. My rooms are clean."

Management likes it too. The mixture costs less than a penny a gallon. It cuts down on employee injuries from chemicals. It reduces shipping costs and waste because hotel staffers prepare the elixir on site. And it's helping the Sheraton Delfina tout its environmental credentials to guests.

The hotel's kitchen staff recently began disinfecting produce with electrolyzed water. They say the lettuce lasts longer. They're hoping to replace detergent in the dishwasher. Management figures the payback time for the $10,000 electrolysis machine will be less than a year.

"It's green. It saves money. And it's the right thing to do," said Glenn Epstein, executive assistant at the Sheraton Delfina. "It's almost like fantasy."

Actually, it's chemistry. For more than two centuries, scientists have tinkered with electrolysis, the use of an electric current to bring about a chemical reaction (not the hair-removal technique of the same name that's popular in Beverly Hills). That's how we got metal electroplating and large-scale production of chlorine, used to bleach and sanitize.

It turns out that zapping salt water with low-voltage electricity creates a couple of powerful yet nontoxic cleaning agents. Sodium ions are converted into sodium hydroxide, an alkaline liquid that cleans and degreases like detergent, but without the scrubbing bubbles. Chloride ions become hypochlorous acid, a potent disinfectant known as acid water.

"It's 10 times more effective than bleach in killing bacteria," said Yen-Con Hung, a professor of food science at the University of Georgia-Griffin, who has been researching electrolyzed water for more than a decade. "And it's safe."  But there is soooo much more in this understanding.

There are drawbacks. But we see them as a non concern

Electrolyzed water loses its potency fairly quickly, so it can't be stored long. Machines are pricey and geared mainly for industrial use. The process also needs to be monitored frequently for the right strength.

Then there's the "magic water" hype that has accompanied electrolyzed drinking water. A number of companies sell so-called ionizers for home use that can range from about $600 to more than $3,000. The alkaline water, proponents say, provides health benefits. But the truth is, you get exactly what you pay for, and the Enagic Kangen water SD501 is the GOLD standard for the industry, so please don't be fooled into thinking or believing the advertising of the "Brand X's" out there, you'll only be throwing away you're money.

But Richard Wullaert, a Santa Barbara consultant, said consumers should be careful.

"Some of these people are making claims that will get everybody in trouble," said Wullaert, whose nonprofit Functional Water Society is spreading the word about electrolyzed water. "It's time for some serious conferences with serious scientists to give this credibility."  We couldn't agree, so long as the FDA and the Major Pharma don't get involved!  We'd like some serious independent comparisons!  We have 100% total confidence, wonder why it hasn't happened yet?

Most of the growth has happened outside the United States.
Russians are putting electrolyzed water down oil wells to kill pesky microbes. Europeans use it to treat burn victims. Electrolyzing equipment is helping to sanitize drinking water in parts of Latin American and Africa.

It's big in Japan. People there spray it on sushi to kill bacteria and fill their swimming pools with it, eliminating the need for harsh chlorine. Doctors use it to sterilize equipment and treat foot fungus and bedsores. It's the secret weapon in Sanyo Electric Corp.'s "soap-less" washing machine.

Now Sanyo is bent on cleaning up Japan's taxis with a tiny air purifier that fits into a car's cup holder. The device uses electrolyzed water to shield passengers from an unwelcome byproduct of Japan's binge-drinking business culture: vomit.

A federal judge ruled this week that Vitaminwater will not, as its labels promise, keep you "healthy as a horse." Nor will it bring about a "healthy state of physical or mental being". Instead, Vitaminwater is really just a sugary snack food; non-carbonated fruit coke disguised as a sports drink. Because it's composed mostly of sugar and not vitamin-laden water, judge John Gleeson held that Vitaminwater's absurd marketing claims were likely to mislead consumers.
Coke tried to explain away claims like "vitamins + water = all you need" as "only puffery." The judge disagreed.
By including the suggestion that the product will “keep you healthy” or “help bring about a healthy state of physical and mental being” alongside such statements, the quoted language implies that the nutrient content of vitaminwater may help consumers maintain healthy dietary practices. I conclude, therefore, in light of the language and context in which they are used, that the statements on the “defense” and “B- Relaxed” labels constitute implied nutrient content claims which use the word “healthy.” Such claims are in violation of violation of FDA regulations because . . . vitaminwater achieves its nutritional content solely through fortification that violates FDA policy.
The ruling rejected Coca Cola's motion to dismiss a class action suit brought by the scrappy do-gooders at the Center for Science in the Interest. The case should now be clear for trial, although it could settle if Coke is willing to change Vitaminwater's name to something less misleading. Cake in a Can, perhaps? With its sweet, bubbly, refreshing taste, soda pop has been a favorite drink for many. Between the caffeine acting as a diuretic and the sugar interfering with the body's absorption of fluids, it makes us even thirstier. Couple that with the pick me up effects of caffeine, it is almost addicting. What was once touted as pharmaceutical remedies for various ailments is now causing health problems among old and young alike. With research uncovering the dangers of soda pop, can we continue to close our eyes? The consumption of soda is leading our children to an early grave.

The History of Soda 

In 1809, the imitation mineral water was born. The combination of sodium bicarbonate and acid produced the effervescence that adds to soda's refreshing taste. In hopes of finding remedies for various ailments, pharmacists across American and Europe experimented with different ingredients. Different flavors like root beer, sarsaparilla, ginger ale, lemon, and other fruit flavors were constantly appearing on the market. In the 1830's, soda pop was finally bottled in glass containers. However, it was difficult to cap, until the 1850 when a manual capping and filling machine was invented.

In the 1880's, manufactures began experiment with adding stimulants like cola nuts and coca leaves. Bolivian workers chewed on coca leaves to ward off fatigue, and West African workers chewed on cola nuts as a stimulant.
In 1886, Coca Cola was developed by John Slyth Pemberton. Containing coca nuts, it was originally marketed as a headache reliever and brain tonic. Since cocaine is derivative of coca leaves, it also had a small amount of cocaine in it. Although it is unknown how much cocaine was in coca cola, between the coca leaves and sugar, it became a popular drink.
Shortly after the invention of Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola was invented 1893 by Caleb Bradham. Unlike Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola contained cola nuts. Pepsi advertised as being a remedy for stomach ailments because of the cola nuts and pepsin, a digestive enzyme.
Throughout the years, soda pop became more and more popular. With the advent of the crown cap in 1892, bottlers were able to successfully contain the gaseous fluids. Following the crown cap, in 1899, the first patent was issued for an automatic glass blowing machine. Prior to that, bottles had to be hand-blown. Between these two inventions, lovers of the bubbly fluids were now able to consume the liquids at home instead of at the pharmacies. In the 1920's, six pack carrying cartons called Hom-Paks were invented, and in the same year, the soda pop began to be sold in vending machines. By 1957, the first aluminum can were used. By 1959, the first diet soda was sold. As the drinks became more popular and it became easier and easier to market them, the industry grew in leaps and bounds.

Teenager Consumption of Soda

Today teenagers and children are the largest consumers of soda. They drink twice as much pop as they do milk, yet twenty years ago the situation was reverse. Studies have shown that teenage boys drink three or more cans per day and 10% drink more than seven cans per day. Likewise, teenage girls drink more than 2 cans per day and 10% drink more than five cans per day. When we where kids, having a soda was a real treat!  And it was ONE soda, I remember RC back in the 60's and none of these refill soda fountains like all the gas stations have.

Obesity and Soda Consumption

This increased consumption of soda pop is causing numerous health problems for our children such as obesity, an increase in diabetes, bone loss, dental caries, and other problems. Children today are less active, even when compared to a few years ago. The trend of decreasing activity and the increasing problems of being overweight or obese may result in children not living as long. Over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rates are increasing. In the United States, 25% of our children are overweight and 11 % are obese. When our children are already struggling with weight issues, should we let them consume calorie laden drinks that have absolutely no nutritional value?
When children consume sugary liquids, research shows that children who drink sugary liquids are fatter than the ones who don't drink them. Research has also shown that children who drink at least 8 ounces of sugary
liquids per day tend to eat more than the ones who don't drink sugary liquids. With these children, they either lack the ability to control their food intake or the additional sugar causes their insulin levels to rise and makes them hungrier.

Diabetes and Soda Consumption Being overweight contributes to their chances of developing diabetes later in life and now. There is a direct relationship between obesity and Type 2 diabetes. In one study done on women, just one soda a day increases the chance of developing diabetes 85 %.

In Type 2 diabetes, the body becomes insulin resistant, and it can no longer use the insulin efficiently. Where as the rule of thumb for diabetes used to be "fair, fat, and forty," now our children are developing diabetes at an increasing rate.

Is Diet Soda the Answer?

Even if people switch to diet soda, weight gain still remains a problem. In one study done by a scientist at the University of Texas in 2005, it was found that people who drink a lot of diet soda are prone to becoming overweight than those which drink the sugar-laden soda. In tracking 1,777 people over seven to eight year period, none of the participants were obese when the study began. Yet, when the study was over, obesity increased by 41% for each can of diet soda consumed.
Furthermore, there was another disturbing study published by the International Journal of Obesity in 2004. In this study, there were two groups of rats. One group was fed sugar-laden fluid for a snack. The other group was fed a snack which was a mixture of sugar and artificial sweeteners. The rats which ate after the mixed fluid snack ate far more than the other group of rates. This led researchers to believe that artificial sweeteners may disturb the body's natural regulation of caloric intake.

Bone Loss and Soda Consumption

If obesity and diabetes were not enough, soda can also cause the loss of bone mass and softening of the teeth. The body requires even levels of phosphoric acid and calcium. Although phosphoric acid is a necessary component of bone, if you have too much of it in your body, bone-weakening effects occur.
Soda contains phosphoric acid. If you ingest too much, phosphoric acid, the excess binds with calcium in the blood. When it binds with calcium, calcium is unavailable for other purposes. Consequently, your body thinks it doesn't have enough calcium, and it leaches calcium from your bones. In addition to leaching calcium, phosphoric acid also neutralizes hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Thus, it interferes with digestion and the ability to utilize nutrients. At a time when our children should be gaining bone mass, they're losing it instead if they drink a lot of soda.

Are Aluminum Cans Dangerous?

Furthermore, soda comes in aluminum cans. Too much aluminum can also cause bone loss. Aluminum is able to bind with both calcium and phosphoric acid and is excreted through the urine. The aluminum can also coat the bones. When this happens, osteomalacia or softening of the bones can occur. Aluminum is also implicated in Alzheimer's disease. Although the aluminum can is coated with plastic on the inside, there may still be a possibility aluminum leaches into the soda.

Caffeine is another culprit in soda. Caffeine acts as a diuretic. Caffeine consumption increases the urinary excretion of calcium. Accordingly, even more calcium is lost from the body. In addition to the loss of calcium, caffeine has other negative side effects.
Caffeine can also act as a central nervous system stimulant. It increases blood pressure and accelerates the heart rate and breathing. It also increases our alertness and energy. However, when caffeine is used excessively; insomnia, diarrhea, and stomach irritation can occur. When its use is discontinued, irritability and lethargy

Carbon Acid and Soda Consumption

Another harmful ingredient in soda is carbon acids. Carbon acids can increase the acidity of blood. When your body chemistry becomes acidic, it can open the door to other diseases. Both cancer and arthritis are more prone to develop in acidic conditions.

Last but not least, tooth decay is on the rise too, and soda is culprit blamed. Soda consists of simple carbohydrates. The bacteria in our mouths ferment the carbohydrates and create an acid. When this acid is created, it destroys the enamel on our teeth. The higher consumption of sugary drinks, the greater the risk for tooth decay. The tooth decay can be reduced somewhat by brushing your teeth more often and drinking soda through a straw.

I've never truly understood Diabetes! I mean type 1 or type 2? I don't mean to take them lightly because I'm very healthy myself, but with as much information as is available today on health etc. why in the world would anyone allow themselves to get into this illness when it seems to me to be so preventable? Your pancreas produces insulin which is released as the glucose in your bloodstream rises. Insulin is a key that unlocks the muscle and lean tissue cells and allows them to absorb glucose. It increases the ability of the cell membranes in the uptake of glucose from the blood. In this way it effectively removes glucose from the blood and prevents it being stored as fat.

The struggle for people with diabetes is that either they don’t produce enough insulin, or the insulin they do produce can’t do its work properly. In addition, because they are in insulin resistance their cells don’t respond properly to insulin. The outcome is that the glucose in their bloodstream can’t get into the muscles and lean tissue so they are left with high blood glucose levels. One way the body tries to cope with this is via increased urination.

Glucagon on the other hand works in reverse to insulin!

When you exercise, for example, your muscles have a high demand for blood sugar as fuel, so your blood glucose level falls. Your pancreas detects that you are low on blood glucose and this triggers a slow down in the secretion of insulin. At the same time the output of glucagons is increased. Glucagon’s job is to break down glycogen, the stored form of glucose in the liver. The liver can now release this glucose into the bloodstream, your blood glucose level rises to where it should be, which in turn signals the pancreas to switch off glucagon release.

What’s really in our bottled water?

Plastic packaging is not without its downsides, and if you thought mineral water was ‘clean’, it may be time to think again. According to Martin Wagner and Jörg Oehlmann from the Department of Aquatic Ecotoxicology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, plastic mineral water bottles contaminate drinking water with estrogenic chemicals.

In an analysis of commercially available mineral waters, the researchers found evidence of estrogenic compounds leaching out of the plastic packaging into the water. What’s more, these chemicals are potent in vivo and result in an increased development of embryos in the New Zealand mud snail. These findings, which show for the first time that substances leaching out of plastic food packaging materials act as functional estrogens, are published in Springer’s journal of Environmental Science and Pollution Research.

Wagner and Oehlmann looked at whether the migration of substances from packaging material into foodstuffs contributes to human exposure to man-made hormones. They analyzed 20 brands of mineral water available in Germany – nine bottled in glass, nine bottled in plastic and two bottled in composite packaging (paperboard boxes coated with an inner plastic film). The researchers took water samples from the bottles and tested them for the presence of estrogenic chemicals in vitro. They then carried out a reproduction test with the New Zealand mud snail to determine the source and potency of the xenoestrogens.

They detected estrogen contamination in 60% of the samples (12 of the 20 brands) analyzed. Mineral waters in glass bottles were less estrogenic than waters in plastic bottles. Specifically, 33% of all mineral waters bottled in glass compared with 78% of waters in plastic bottles and both waters bottled in composite packaging showed significant hormonal activity.

By breeding the New Zealand mud snail in both plastic and glass water bottles, the researchers found more than double the number of embryos in plastic bottles compared with glass bottles. Taken together, these results demonstrate widespread contamination of mineral water with potent man-made estrogens that partly originate from compounds leaching out of the plastic packaging material.

The authors conclude: “We must have identified just the tip of the iceberg in that plastic packaging may be a major source of xenohormone* contamination of many other edibles. Our findings provide an insight into the potential exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals due to unexpected sources of contamination.€

Lately I've noticed more news article written on Arsenic poisoning, this time as a result of Arsenic contaminated water wells in the Fraser Valley. It seems every few years this subject hits the news, we then hear nothing further for awhile.

I'm certainly not a specialist in Arsenic poisoning but I do know a little bit about water wells and Arsenic contamination. Many people are quite surprised when I explain Arsenic can be detected in groundwater but generally not at excessive levels that could cause health concerns from what we are told. I'm not here to question the experts on the subject of arsenic poisoning but making the assumption that your well water is safe based on expert opinion alone is probably not a good idea... all wells need to be tested from time to time. I'll add a few links where you'll find plenty of expert information on Arsenic poisoning and contamination.

Arsenic in water wells is an important subject so I'll try to keep it short in hopes that you read this entire article. Arsenic (As) is a chemical element, most often it's naturally occurring in bedrock... Arsenic is also known to leach into water wells from other sources such as mining, agriculture, etc but my knowledge is limited in these known secondary sources of groundwater contamination. Arsenic is widely distributed all over the world, it's found in the crust of the earth. Seldom would we think of the possibility of Arsenic consumption by means of the water that we are ingesting from our own well water. Instead Arsenic's notoriety as a intoxicant is seemingly best exemplified by the fact that for centuries it had been the poison of choice for many homicidal and suicidal deaths.


How can Arsenic affect my health?

Inorganic Arsenic is a known human poison and has been since ancient times. Chronic Arsenic poisoning may occur after long-term exposure to lower levels of Arsenic or short-term exposure to very high levels of Arsenic, either which may cause symptoms of Arsenic poisoning. Exposure to Arsenic via drinking water as been shown to cause severe disease. Arsenic is a known carcinogen and can enter the body when ingesting Arsenic contaminated water. Harvard University has conducted an extensive study on Arsenic contamination, Arsenic poisoning including the known symptoms of Arsenic poisoning. It seems that much of the study has taken place in Bangladesh. Be prepared, The Harvard University Website is very graphic and quite disturbing.

Arsenic in Well Water

On November 18, 2007, the Surrey Leader from the Fraser Valley indicated that Arsenic levels in local private wells have risen, prompting the Regional Health Authority to issue a warning to homeowners using private water wells.

There was an extremely interesting Arsenic contamination discovery on Salt Spring Island in August 2000, the sudden discovery was quite devastating for some of the residents involved. For a short time I was involved in the Salt Spring Island situation, but continued to follow the case for 5 years. By experience over the years I've come to realize that all wells really need to be tested for Arsenic prior to use for human consumption. While acute Arsenic Poisoning may not be all that common in Canada, low dose exposure may be much more common than anyone realizes. Over the past few years the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines "Maximum Acceptable Limit" have substantially decreased for acceptable Arsenic levels. Arsenic is one of the many chemicals for which Health Canada has set guidelines. A new Arsenic guideline has been established at 0.010 milligrams per liter.

The Problem as I See It ....

It seems we are far too focused on what is known as a "Potability Report" in the Real Estate Industry. A Potability Report is a basic report that really isn't very informative at all... in fact it's a joke, it can easily be tampered with to manipulate results. Sometimes all this report provides to the general public is a false sense of security...it does so quite successfully. No one can know if Arsenic contamination is an issue in their well or the well that they are about to purchase unless they are properly informed. Without testing the water they'll likely have no idea if their family is at risk of potential Arsenic poisoning with possible exposure to low or high levels of Arsenic for perhaps a period of many years.

Yes,it does appear that Arsenic issues occur in concentrated areas... which is suggested in studies that have been conducted by experts. I don't feel that I can comfortably agree with this point of view, it can also be random. I also believe that wells can cross contaminate!

I strongly feel that our professional opinions may sometimes only breed ignorance as not all areas or wells have been studied or tested, and people accept them as the gospel. In fact from my experience I've found that most wells have never had comprehensive tests done for most elements including Arsenic. Wells can be randomly contaminated, I've seen the water test report indicating excessive Arsenic levels without any history of contamination in the area of where the well is located.

Most wells won't have an excessive Arsenic problem but there'll be some that do. Also as the maximum acceptable levels of Arsenic in Canada and the USA have decreased therefore there will definitely be more wells that are not meeting the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines. The only time you should not be concerned is if you've had your water well tested for Arsenic, even if your well water test results look great at this time you might still consider periodic testing.... perhaps annually if you'd really like to be diligent about this. I think that it's also good to stagger the time of the year that you do test, the results may differ as well.


Let's Take The Lid Off The Well!

Sometimes I notice a less information is better attitude in the Real Estate Industry, it's frustrating. We could give so much more information than what's currently being offered regarding the water systems that people are purchasing. I know that some purchaser's really don't care and that's just the way it is. I also know that some sellers don't care and would rather that the truth not be known when it comes to certain aspects of their property.

Generally though, most purchasers simply don't realize that they're missing a bunch of data and would certainly be concerned if they knew they should be. People simply don't know to question what the state of their health may be after long term ingestion of contaminated water. Many of us have friends and relatives dealing with cancer and it's never occurred to me that their cancer could be the result of long term Arsenic poisoning. We just generally accept that it's cancer... possibly we need to think more about our drinking water and cancer. It's time to start asking questions about the bill of goods that we are being sold. Perhaps we could make a difference for one just person by being a bit more aware, that's enough for me.

Purchasers are often lacking vital information, important and easily accessible data which could possibly make all difference in another person's life somewhere down the road. What the Salt Spring Island families went through was criminal in my opinion.

Some Realtor s insist that only a basic potability report is required for "their deal"... but sometimes all I'm hearing loud and clear when I'm called on to do an inspection is "Don't Rock The Boat, We Don't Want to Find Any Problems."

It seems to me that that there may be times when information is controlled or manipulated for obvious reasons. Purchasers are supplied the basic required data but often no more than what's often absolutely necessary to get the deal through, this could perhaps be construed as a bit of a fine line ethically.

In fact back in August 2000, I had one developer/Realtor inform me that "A little Arsenic will never hurt anyone." After I had discovered that there had been quite a number of lots sold, which were laced with high concentrations of Arsenic. That was was the response I received when I confronted the person, I think you can well imagine where I felt like running a pipeline of Arsenic laced water at that moment, at about 100lbs PSI! In this case, there were obviously no ethics in tact what-so-ever. Sadly this appeared to be a shocking case of fraudulent misrepresentation that indeed created great financial and emotional hardship for the plaintiffs involved.

Even after several years involving class action litigation and plenty of media attention on a relatively small island this person somehow managed to keep their shingle on the wall and is still in business today... more on The Arsenic Stories later.

Please allow me to clearly state that the defendant who was involved in the Arsenic Contamination case on Salt Spring Island, is not a reflection of the Real Estate industry as a whole, most Realtors are very up to speed with this information and will generally go beyond the call of duty to advise their clients accordingly.

I've located Arsenic contaminated private wells both on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, I'm sure there's a few more of them out there but homeowners and purchasers may never know if they don't start testing their wells. It doesn't matter where you live, if you're drinking well water you should know what's in it. Reselling a property with an Arsenic contaminated well may be a bit of an issue, would you knowingly purchase real estate with an Arsenic Contaminated well?.... Exactly, that's my point! Not too many people would, so don't be signing up to be the future vendor of one of these puppies without knowing what you are getting into.

There's much information available on Arsenic poisoning, research has also pointed out significantly higher standardized mortality ratios and cumulative mortality rates for various cancers.

It is not my intent to frighten anyone and perhaps Arsenic Poisoning may not be common but please don't be passive on this subject, everyone should consider testing their water.
